Measuring Buttons
Measure the diameter across the widest point of the button face. For shank buttons, measure the cap only — exclude the shank.
What is Ligne?
Ligne is the French-origin unit standard across the global button trade. 1L = 0.635 mm. 40L = 1 inch. Written as "L" on spec sheets and purchase orders.
Standard Ranges by Garment
Shirts: 14L–24L. Trousers: 24L–28L. Jacket sleeves: 32L–36L. Jacket fronts: 36L–40L. Outerwear: 44L–72L. Always confirm with your pattern maker.
