All the horn buttons and toggles we sell are sourced from Italian Water Buffalo. They’re raised on large farms and selectively bred in Italy for the production of buffalo milk used to make mozzarella and yogurt, among other things. Water Buffalo meat is also a delicacy enjoyed on a regular basis in certain regions of Italy - when the buffalo are done living out their best life, they’re butchered for both fresh and preserved meat.
Rather than toss the horn and bone, it’s sorted by color, then upcycled specifically for the production of all sorts of household items; bowls, kitchen utensils, those mugs you see on your favorite viking television show, and buttons!
The best part of all of this is that all the of the production takes place right in Italy, in factories that provide a livable wage to all of their workforce. The water buffalo never see the inside of a cage or pen, mainly because when they’re able to roam freely on the farms, they eat all the vegetation that would otherwise block up the waterways and drainage ditches.
